Frequently asked questions

How do I cancel my VoicePencil Pro subscription?

All subscriptions are managed by Apple. To cancel: open the iOS Settings app, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap VoicePencil, then tap Cancel Subscription. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you keep Pro access until then.

You do not need to contact us to cancel and we cannot cancel on your behalf — Apple holds the subscription record.

How do I restore my purchase after reinstalling?

Open VoicePencil, go to Settings, and tap "Restore Purchases." This contacts Apple and re-activates any active subscription tied to your Apple ID. You must be signed into the same Apple ID that purchased the subscription.

How do I delete all of my data?

In the app: Settings → AI & Privacy → Delete All Data. This wipes every note, transcript, action item, embedding, and local preference from your device, and removes your install_id's monthly usage record from our backend.

There is no recovery after this — make sure you have exported anything you want to keep first.

How do I export my notes?

Settings → AI & Privacy → Export Data. This generates a structured JSON file containing every note, transcript, summary, action item, and timestamp. You can share it via AirDrop, save to Files, or email it to yourself.

Does VoicePencil work offline?

Yes, for the core note-taking experience. Recording audio, reading existing notes, browsing folders, completing action items, and searching by keyword all work offline.

AI features — transcription, summarization, action-item extraction, semantic search, YouTube import, learning tools — require an internet connection because they call third-party AI providers.

Which AI services does VoicePencil use?

We use Deepgram and AssemblyAI for speech-to-text, OpenAI for summaries and AI features, Voyage AI for semantic-search embeddings, and Supadata for YouTube transcripts. We never train models on your content, and our providers are contracted to do the same.

You can review the complete list in our Privacy Policy, and you can disable all AI processing in Settings → AI & Privacy.

Why does the app ask for microphone, calendar, or location permission?

— Microphone: required to record voice notes. Without it, recording is disabled.

— Calendar: optional, used only when you tap "Add to calendar" on an action item. We do not read your calendar in bulk.

— Location: optional, used only when you tap "Geo-tag this note." The coordinate is stored locally with the note and is never uploaded.

— Photos: optional, used only if you choose a profile photo from your library.

— Speech recognition: optional, used to show a live transcript preview while recording (the final transcript still comes from Deepgram).

Every permission can be revoked any time in iOS Settings → VoicePencil.

I see "monthly limit reached" — when does it reset?

Free and Pro tiers each have monthly per-feature caps. They reset on the first of each month in UTC. If you need more capacity, upgrading to Pro Annual provides the highest caps. The Subscriptions screen in Settings shows your current plan and the limits for each feature.

I deleted the app — will my notes still be there if I reinstall?

No. Notes live only on your device. Uninstalling VoicePencil deletes the local storage, and reinstalling creates a fresh install with no data. Export your notes before deleting if you want to keep them.

Your Pro subscription is tied to your Apple ID, not the install, so you can restore it after reinstall.

Is my Pro Annual price locked in?

The price you paid at signup is the price that auto-renews unless we notify you of a change in advance (per Apple's rules, at least 30 days for any increase, with an opt-in confirmation on renewal). New customers may see a different launch price.

How do I report a bug or request a feature?

Email sm@verdorian.com with the details. Screenshots and your device model + iOS version help us reproduce issues. We read every email and respond within one to two business days.

How do I report a security vulnerability?

Email sm@verdorian.com with "Security:" at the start of the subject. We respond within five business days and will coordinate a fix and disclosure timeline with you.

Self-serve controls

Most account and data controls are accessible directly inside the app. Open VoicePencil and tap the gear icon to reach Settings.

  • Cancel subscription: iOS Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions → VoicePencil.
  • Restore purchase: Settings → Subscription → Restore Purchases.
  • Export notes: Settings → AI & Privacy → Export Data.
  • Delete all data: Settings → AI & Privacy → Delete All Data.
  • Disable AI: Settings → AI & Privacy → Disable AI.
  • Revoke AI consent: Settings → AI & Privacy → Revoke Consent.
  • Refund (Apple): reportaproblem.apple.com.
